Our technology

How we trace a call back to the ad click that produced it

Fast Towing USA operates its own call-attribution platform, built and hosted in-house. It links incoming phone calls to the Google Ads clicks that preceded them, records what happened on each call, and reports completed jobs back to Google Ads. This page explains how the platform works and how it integrates with the Google Ads API.

We are an independent towing and roadside-assistance dispatch company. We do not own tow trucks; we connect callers with licensed, independent third-party operators. The platform described here exists to tell us which of our ads bring in the calls that turn into completed jobs.

What the platform does

Following a request from the ad click to the finished job

Almost every customer request we receive arrives by phone, and we advertise on Google Ads with call campaigns. A click tells us someone opened our ad. It does not tell us whether that person then called, whether they needed a tow, whether we could find an operator, or what the job was worth. The platform closes that gap in five stages. It reports only calls for which a GCLID was captured.

Capture the ad click

When a visitor lands on one of our pages from a Google ad, the page reads the Google click identifier (GCLID) from the URL and stores it with that visit. The GCLID is the thread that ties everything afterward back to a specific ad click.

Connect the call to the click

The phone number displayed on the page is swapped for a tracking number tied to that visit, so when the visitor calls, the call is matched to the GCLID. A third-party call-tracking provider is part of this stack. The uploads to Google Ads described below are made by our own platform, not by that provider.

Forward, answer and log the call

Calls to the tracking number are forwarded to our business phone line, where our dispatch team answers them. Each call is logged with its time, duration and marketing source. We later check that dispatch log against our advertising data.

Record the outcome and the job value

Staff record the outcome of each request in an internal dashboard: job completed, no operator available in the area, caller declined the quote, and so on. When a job is completed through one of the independent operators we coordinate, staff enter the value of that job against the call.

Report completed jobs to Google Ads

A few times a day, an automated task collects newly confirmed job values and uploads them to Google Ads as offline conversions, matched by GCLID. Google Ads then measures revenue per click for our campaigns rather than clicks alone, which is what lets us judge which campaigns and keywords actually produce work.

Data handling

What the platform processes, and why

The platform handles three kinds of information, all of it used solely to measure Fast Towing USA's own advertising and to keep our dispatch records and our Google Ads data in agreement. The platform runs on a server we operate and is used only by our own team.

Of this information, only the GCLID, the conversion date and time, and the job value with its currency are sent to Google Ads. The caller's phone number and the other call details are kept in our internal records and are not sent to Google Ads.

How we handle caller information more broadly, including the recording and tracking of calls to our number, is described in our Privacy Policy.

Three kinds of information

  • Ad-click identifiers (the GCLID).
  • Call details: the time of the call, its duration and the caller's phone number.
  • Outcomes and job values entered by our staff.
